My big sister, a keen fashion historian and seamstress, always wanted me to keep a daily fashion diary that would serve as a record for future generations of everyday dress in our lifetime.
Sadly, my sister died in 2011, before our project came to fruition. This blog is for her; I'm just sorry that I didn't start it sooner. I hope she would approve.

Well, here it is! Outfit #365, and the end of elisabeth-emma’s first year. I’m proud to say that I have blogged every day, whether I have been in Singapore or Sydney, wide awake or jet lagged, healthy or in bed with a cold. It feels like quite an achievement! Here’s to another year of blogging. Thanks so much for all your kind messages and encouraging words!
I feel that I have learned a lot since I launched this blog. I started it for two reasons; firstly, as you know, to commemorate my sister, the Elisabeth Emma who was such an inspiration. I think that she would approve of how it has turned out (although she wouldn’t necessarily approve of all of my looks!) Secondly, this time last year, I was feeling pretty low. Having lost my sister less than a year earlier, I’d fallen into a lull - sleeping too much, caring too little about my appearance, and generally depressed and lethargic. It might sound ridiculous, but this project seemed to give me a new lease of life. I’ve taken great pleasure in choosing my outfits, photographing them (sometimes under tricky circumstances) and writing about them. What’s more, it’s forced me to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses. Photoshop may have the capacity to hide a multitude of sins, but an untouched photograph never lies: much as I may have tried to convince myself that certain things suited me, seeing them on screen sometimes proved otherwise! I have finally accepted that, just as Trinny & Susannah said, curvy girls look a lot better with a well defined silhouette and v-neck, no matter how cool slouchy styles look on flat chested girls. I don’t think there’s any need to be overly prescriptive in these things, but it’s good to have a code for guidance - particularly on those days when nothing in that wardrobe seems right! Stay tuned for elisabeth-emma’s school rules for the new sartorial term…
Today, I headed back to the office after a fabulous Christmas break wearing a cheery outfit to brighten up a grey day. I’m wearing a pencil skirt from Hobbs; I’ve been hankering after it for several weeks, and was delighted to find it half price in the sale on Monday! Isn’t the bold check fantastic? Perfect for winter! I paired it with my favourite blouse (the cost per wear must be down to mere pennies by now…) and a bright red cardigan. I accessorised with a narrow black patent belt, black ankle strap heels, and my new red bag. Bring on 2013 - I’m ready!

It’s bitterly cold in London this week; temperatures are sub-zero, and we’re all bundling up for the morning commute! On Monday, I planned to cycle in the evening, so chose skinny plum coloured jeans and brogues with a stretch wrap dress in metallic navy. I accessorised with an elegant gold necklace and cheery red satchel. To stay warm, I wore a fur snood and woollen trench coat. As I dashed out of the house, I also grabbed my ear muffs and warm, lined leather gloves. Brrrr!

A horrible day - pouring rain, icy cold and grey. Definitely a waterproof day! My boyfriend and I had decided to cycle home together in the evening (we had two bikes that needed to come home, so it was necessary despite the weather) so I opted for skinny jeans and boots. I added this fantastic blouse and Fairisle cardigan, and to stay warm, a cosy scarf. Fortunately, by the time we had to cycle, the rain had cleared and it was just cold and crisp. We were cycling in the dark, so I added a reflective belt for visibility. Safety before style!

When I was a little girl, my mother always used to say that, when it comes to sleep, an hour before midnight is worth two after. Much as we all hate to admit that our mothers are right, it’s absolutely true. Last night, I flaked out early, and was fast asleep by 10.30pm. It was no problem waking up at 6am this morning for our Ocado delivery! I really should go to sleep at that time every night; it feels so good to wake up early in the morning! I felt bright and breezy this morning, and pulled on this blouse which has quickly become a firm favourite in my wardrobe. Today, I’m wearing it underneath a charcoal wool tank top (it’s really too warm for sweaters and cardigans this week), with skinny black jeans and pink shoes. I’m ready for another day at the office! I’m enjoying my fringe; I think it goes with this blouse nicely…
Now, I can’t stop singing “Que Sera Sera”. When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother…

I didn’t feel like leaving the house this morning at all! Cold, damp, grey - and I had cramps. I forced myself into this slinky brocade-print pencil skirt and heels though, and felt much better for it. There’s nothing like a smart look to lift you out of the doldrums!
Happy Friday, everybody!

Yesterday, I wore one of my favourite dresses - this metallic navy wrap, from ASOS - layered over a silky maroon top and tights. I accessorised with a wide silver belt and pewter grey handbag for a day at the office. It’s a shame my hair looks so rubbish…
Did you spot our cat’s guest appearance?

This weekend has been so much fun; we’ve cycled in Richmond Park, been to the Barbican to see an excellent short play (Hate, by Studio Dubbelagent), paid a visit to the Tate to see the sublime Klein x Moriyama exhibition, and caught up on some much-needed sleep. I feel so refreshed! This morning, I pulled on my skinny black jeans and this chunky metallic knit over a vintage cream blouse for a quiet day of running errands and riding my new bicycle. I wore flat brown leather boots - I’m not sure I can cycle in heels!

I enjoyed wearing this blouse so much yesterday that I reached for it again this morning. However, instead of a menswear-inspired look, today I paired it with a feminine pleated skirt and maroon knitted waistcoat (both Laura Ashley, from a few years ago) and high heels. Feeling preppy and ready for school! (Or, work…)

My boyfriend may have a point in likening me to Colonel Sanders, but I really love this blouse! It just arrived from ASOS, and I’m crazy about it. Yesterday, I paired it with wide-legged trousers, mannish brogues and a long cardigan for a day at the office. It felt rather Annie Hall.

Well, my wardrobe is now unpacked, and I can reach all of my accessories and shoes! Hurrah! This morning, the sun was shining and I picked out these silky purple pants. I love jewel-toned clothes at this time of year. I added this navy metallic wrap dress - it’s so flattering and easy to wear! I accessorised with a gold necklace and pink suede shoes, and this hot pink scarf - thank goodness, because it was actually pretty cold today! Tomorrow, I think I need to wear a jacket… Autumn’s on its way!

Date: Sunday 29th July 2012 Place: Haddon Hall, Peak District
To celebrate the end of my holiday, my mum and I decided to take an overnight trip to the beautiful Peak District. We spent yesterday exploring ancient Haddon Hall - it has been used for filming a wealth of period dramas, so parts of it were quite familiar. The Other Boleyn Girl, three adaptations of Jane Eyre, Pride & Prejudice and Elizabeth are just a few of the films which have featured the house! If you visit the Peak District, I can highly recommend a trip to the hall, to see the lovely gardens if nothing else.
I wore my apricot metallic sweater with slim taupe trousers and pink ballet pumps, and accessorised with a blowsy corsage and pearly bracelet.

Date: Tuesday 24th July 2012 Place: Betty’s Tearoom, Ilkley
To celebrate my mum’s recent retirement, the two of us took a trip to Betty’s, a wonderful Yorkshire institution where you’ll find the best afternoon tea around! We went for lunch, and tucked into delicious (and healthy!) salads followed by scrumptious cream cakes.
I wore a metallic apricot sweater with this cream skirt, which is fast becoming a firm favourite in my wardrobe…

Boy oh boy, am I glad to be home!
I forced myself out of pyjamas and into clothes and makeup. I feel better for it. Not quite so lethargic and jet lagged! I went for this navy blue wrap dress and vibrant purple pants for an easy day at home.

LOOK AT THIS WEATHER! This balcony, this view…! I’m usually keen to get home after a trip, but I just want to stay here for a while… However, I have to fly to London via Amsterdam today.
I went for jewel tones this morning, feeling inspired by the day: I’m wearing the turquoise ASOS dress over the purple Zara pants, with heels. Verdict?

Bonsoir from the Cote D’Azur!
Heading to the South of France, it seemed appropriate to wear this glamorous turquoise wrap dress with fuchsia pink beads and heels. I felt very chic at Charles de Gaulle this morning!
Tomorrow, I will fly to Madrid via Barcelona. It’s going to be a long, busy day! Au revoir ‘til then…
